NANOTECHNOLOGY IN SUNSCREENS-how does it helps?

what is nanotechnology? why does it matters?


That questions might pop out into your mind when you first read the title. So what actually is nanotechnology? The word "nano" typically defined as a dimension of a small object or small particles where 1nanometer equal to 1 over 1billion meters (0.000000001m). Nanotechnology here can be understood as the science of investigating and innovating various properties of matter on an extraordinary small scale. Then, "maybe" there is a small number of you, do not know what is sunscreen. Sunscreen is consider as a cosmetic item that is used to prevent our skin to have direct contact with light from sun or the ultraviolet exposure.

In the early invention of sunscreen, the traditional inorganic sunscreens have been made with UV filters, such as iron, titanium and zinc. These active chemical ingredients were selected because of they are able to block UVA and UVB radiation and provide better photoprotection compare to other agents, such as octyl cinnamate. Gradually, their use has been limited due to their poor texture and unfavorable cosmetic appearance. These substances (iron, titanium and zinc) are difficult to suspend in bulk form. They have tendency to leave a chalky, opaque white residue on the skin and it is unacceptable to consumers.

Thanks to the contribution and fast development in cosmetic industry, nanoformulations has led to titanium dioxide (TiO2) and zinc oxide (ZnO) based products with better properties. These nanoparticles were found out not only good at their highly effective UV light absorbing capacity, but also absorb and scatter visible light and rendered them transparent on the skin. The nanoscale ZnO and TiO2 also feel lighter on skin and require less reapplication of the product. This nanotechnology use in sunscreen has help the shape and size of the particles boost up the sun protection. We understand that the smaller the particles are, the easier it will absorb into our pores, so this small particles are better in protecting our skin from damage due to the exposure of the UV light. So now, you might want to check your ingredients of your sunscreen, right? So, does it implies this technology? and are you comfortable enough wearing your sunscreen? If not, it might not implies this technology.
